Overview

Asam Pedas JR, nestled in the heart of Melaka at Taman Costa Mahkota, offers an authentic journey into the rich and tangy world of traditional Malay cuisine. This restaurant focuses on asam pedas, a beloved dish known for its bold, sour, and spicy flavors, featuring a variety of main ingredients like ikan pari (stingray), kepala ikan (fish head), ikan kembung (mackerel), and even daging tetel (beef brisket). Each variant presents a nuanced interpretation of the classic gravy—thick yet balanced, hearty without overwhelming the palate.

The highlight here is undoubtedly their asam pedas dishes. The gravy strikes a fine balance between acidity and spice, lending a savory depth that complements the fresh seafood and meat selections. Diners familiar with watery versions elsewhere will appreciate the richer, more intense sauces served here, as noted by regulars who admire the robust flavors and satisfying portions. Accompanying dishes like kupang goreng, maggi goreng, and various vegetable sides enhance the meal, catering to diverse tastes.

Beyond the food, the atmosphere at Asam Pedas JR adds a special touch to the dining experience. The space is cozy yet lively, often enlivened by live buskers playing nostalgic local tunes that resonate particularly well with an audience that appreciates a soothing blend of culture and comfort. This blend of traditional flavors with an engaging ambience makes the venue a favored spot for families and groups seeking both quality and warmth in their meal outings.

Practical considerations include limited parking, which prospective guests should plan for, especially during peak hours. There's also a unique service where staff offer family photo sessions—a quaint gesture that adds a personal touch to the visit, optional and appreciated by many. While some might find the pricing slightly on the higher side, the overall experience—from the flavor profiles to the setting—earns Asam Pedas JR a solid recommendation for anyone eager to savor Melaka’s culinary heritage in a welcoming environment.

Went there Saturday 12.30noon, luckily table for 5 are still available. Ordered asam pedas telur ikan and ikan kembong, ayam masak lemak, ayam goreng, 6 plates rice, all are RM68. To me a bit pricey. Taste wise, even better if the gravy is to be thicker. Drinks sold nearby, ordered a jug of teh-o-ais for RM7. There are also varieties of lauk for you to choose from. There'll be their staff takes your family photo, only for RM10, up to you to buy or not. Parking will be a bit challenge. Overall 4 stars for you.

Asam Pedas was to put liking. The gravy was thick and savoury, not like most that's very watery. The fish portion was enough for me but some may say they can get bigger pieces elsewhere. The best was the ambience. There was a live busker playing our favourite 80s local hits. And that made the night amazing.
